Hosted by Steve Webb. In Touch With God's Character is a show that helps us to know our Creator in a new, fresh, and encouraging way. In this episode we learn that when Jesus is our Savior, when we belong to Him, when we acknowledge that we need His strength, when we call out to Him, then He hears us.
Hosted by Steve Webb. Steven and Maryanne talk about how their marriage survived the loss of their fifteen year old son, Luke. In addition they discuss how their family and priorities have changed, and their reasons for opening their lives for public view. I have so much admiration for them for opening up their lives as they have done, but they truly want others to be helped by their experiences. And it is good to know that, even through the human frailties, God will lift us up and help us to make it through. It can be a long and painful process, and both Steven and Maryann said that they are still working through some of the aftermath of such a great loss, you heard two people who still love God and trust Him. Thank you again, Steven and Maryann, for your generous gift of time to me and the family of Lifespring! listeners.
Hosted by Steve Webb. Today we’ll hear part 2 of my interview with Steven and Maryanne Abbate, parents of a whole family of great kids, one of whom, Luke, was tragically killed in an automobile accident in February of 2006. A movie has been made about the accident and how the Abbate family has coped with the loss, and how God has used it to bring some amazing blessings into the lives of others. That movie is The 5th Quarter, and may be in a theater near you, or hopefully will be.
Hosted by Steve Webb. Part 1 of my interview with Steven and Maryanne Abbate, parents of Luke Abbate. The film, "The 5th Quarter" is based on the true story of this family's tragic loss.
Hosted by Steve Webb. Today, we conclude our conversation with the remarkable Ellie Collins. By way of review, Ellie has told us of her very poor and traumatic childhood and adolescence. Raised by a physically abusive grandmother, sexually abused by her step-father and step-brother, forced into a marriage at 16 years old to a much older man who raped and beat her, raped again by a man who was supposed to be helping her escape, and then forced into prostitution. In the midst of this, she cries out to God in the best way she knows how, and pleas with Him to get her out of there. Miraculously, God sends a friend who helps her escape the clutches of the brothel owner. She makes her way to America, learns to speak English, and ultimately begins to build a life as a beautician, with a clientele that includes Hollywood celebrities. She marries a man who after several years of marriage desserts her. This sends her into a life of drugs and promiscuity. This is where we begin our episode.
Hosted by Steve Webb. Today, we continue our conversation with Ellie Collins. Last episode, we heard a story of innocence lost, betrayal, violence, human traficking and more, as Ellie told about her childhood in Honduras where she lived with her physically abusive grandmother, then with her mother where her step-father and step-brother abused her sexually. She was then forced into a marriage at 16 years old to a much older man who raped her and beat her and would leave her tied up while he left the shack they lived in. She ran away from there, only to be raped again by a man who was supposed to be helping her escape, and finally she finds herself seemingly rescued by a woman who takes her in, buys her medical care, and clothes, gives her a place to stay...only to find out that she is indebted to the woman, who is requiring her to work off the debt in the brothel the woman owns. We’ll pick up the story here.....
Hosted by Steve Webb. I have a very special guest today, and the story you are about to hear will probably have you on the edge of your seat. It’s a story of innocence lost, betrayal, and violence, but even more, it is a story of God’s love, and His healing, redemptive power. When I first heard this story, I knew that I had to introduce you to this incredible woman, whose name is Ellie Collins. Ellie's full story is written about in the book "Crossing Over".

Hosted by Steve Webb. The world is just a little bit poorer, and Heaven just a bit richer, with the passing of Kevin Thomson this past Sunday, May 30, 2010. Who was Kevin Thomson, you ask? He's the guy playing the bass on the music you'll be hearing on the show today. He's one of the founders of the Sweet Comfort Band. He was, according to all accounts, one of the most solid believers you would ever want to meet. If you're not familiar with the Sweet Comfort Band, or SCB as they were sometimes called, let me give you a very brief synopsis of their history. SCB was formed in 1972, and played their first gig right here in Riverside, I believe the venue was what was then called Calvary Chapel of Riverside, now known as Harvest Fellowship, with Greg Laurie being the Pastor then and now. This was during the Jesus Movement, and they brought a new style of Christian music...a sort of mixture of rock, jazz and funk that had never been heard in this context. The Jesus music, up to this point, was sort of a folk rock or soft rock, with the likes of Love Song, Children of the Day, Mustard Seed Faith and others. SCB's tight instrumentation and energy set them apart. By the time they played their last concert, also here in Riverside, 1984, they had sold millions of albums, and Contemporary Christian Music had been forever changed. If you've been a listener for a while to the Lifesping shows, you know that one of my good friends is Bryan Duncan, who was one of the lead vocalists with Sweet Comfort. It was from Bryan that I learned of Kevin's passing. I thought it would be good to hear from him his memories of Kevin, so I asked him to come into the studio. Then I thought how cool it would be if he would call the other Sweet Comfort Band members, drummer Rick Thomson (Kevin's brother), and guitar player and vocalist Randy Thomas, to see if we might be able to do a conference call and get their input as well. It was short notice, and Randy couldn't join us on the phone from Nashville, but Rick, who I just learned lives right here in Riverside, was able to come into the studio.

Today: Revisiting the story behind "Jesus Loves Me", perhaps the best known children's hymn of all time. The reason we're doing this is that, when I did it in HymnStories #2, I didn't have a version of the music with the lyrics that was cleared for play in a podcast. Now that more music is available, I felt it was time to bring it back.

Listen to the show to have your concept (and mybe your viewpoint) of the knowledge of God challenged!
Hosted by Steve Webb. A different kind of Lifespring! Weekend Music Show today. I usually have a mix of non-religious and Christian music on the show, but today's selection is all Christian. Hosted by Steve Webb. Folks, as I record this, we are two weeks away from Christmas, and I really feel like we need to be encouraged. We need to hear from God. Let's face it, as we listen to the news, or read the paper, or scan through our RSS subscriptions, the world is in pretty bad shape. The economy, pretty much world wide, is in a decline. Just last month, over a half million people in the U.S. lost their jobs. The U.S. government is shoveling billions and billions of taxpayer dollars...your money and mine...into failing companies, with doubtful benefit to you and me. 401k account balances are in the tank. Thankfully, gasoline prices are lower than they have been in years, but do you think that's going to last? Personally, I don't. I could go on, but that's not what I want to talk about today. I want to encourage you. If your family is anything like mine, or millions of other families in this country, there will be fewer gifts under the tree this Christmas, because of the things I mentioned a few moments ago. Should we be sad because that? Should we be fearful because of the economy? Who is in control? To whom do we go for advice, for reassuring words, for strength, for courage? I think you know my answer. We go to the Lord. God is still on throne. He hasn't lost His job. He is not surprised by falling stock prices or the big three auto makers on the brink of bankruptcy. Jesus is still our salvation, our redeemer. The Holy Spirit is still our Comforter. Today, I want to look at several scriptures that remind us of what God has said. I'll be reading a lot of scripture today, and commenting a little. His words are much better than mine, and I just really think that we need to hear from God today, and not so much from Steve. I hope that's okay with you. Listen to the show to hear the what God has to say to lift our hearts.
We're to warmer climes today and Madagascar! We'll find out how to say Happy Christmas in Malagasy with a message from a friend of James and also hear about Christmas in Madagascar.

He has a show called "The New Forest Podcast." Portuguese is the language of the day, and we see the similarities between Portugal's traditional Christmas celebrations and your host, Steve Webb's family celebration. Though there is no Portuguese or Brazilian heritage in the family, the way Christmas is celebrated has some striking resemblances!
On today’s show, James Cooper tries to get his tonsils around four different ways of saying Happy Christmas and all from India: Hindi and Urdu, Sanskrit, Bengali and Tamil! And we’ll also find out a bit more about Christmas in India.
Hosted by Steve Webb. Today you are going to hear some of the best music out there because I'm going to share a conversation I recently had with Mr. David Phelps. Perhaps best known for his 8 years with the Gaither Vocal Band, he's been solo since 2005, releasing five or so CDs since then. He has an amazing tenor voice, with a three octave range. His audiences have included George W. Bush, massive crowds at Billy Graham Crusades, four Dove Awards, two Grammy Awards, and over 13 gold and 15 platinum-selling projects. If you have never heard him, you are in for a treat today, and if are familiar with his work, I think you'll enjoy getting to know him better today. You'll hear some songs from his two newest projects, and he talks about his childhood, how he decided that he wanted to make singing his life's pursuit, how he met Jesus, and lots more.

Hosted by Steve Webb. Wow! As we celebrate four years, I guess it's somewhat apropos that, as the very first Christian podcast not based on repurposed church sermons, we have one of the fellows who was at ground zero of the beginning of Jesus Music...the precursor of Contemporary Christian Music. Chuck Girard was one of the founding members of the group, Love Song, which first started singing at Calvary Chapel Bible studies in Costa Mesa, California. This was at the very beginning of the Jesus People movement, which began at Calvary Chapel. Even before this time, however, Chuck was there during the early days of rock 'n' roll, recording with several bands, including The Castells and The Hondells. This interview is full of music clips and several full songs that you are sure to enjoy.

Hosted by Steve Webb. Wow. The economy is tough, isn’t it? Shayna asked me for my reaction to this blog post. The topic addressed in the post was how some people are giving up their houses in order to continue to pay their tithes. In this episode of Lifespring!, I give you my opinion, I believe based on Scripture, about tithing. Is tithing required, is it scriptural, will God be mad at you if you don’t tithe?

Hosted by Steve Webb. Lifespring! HymnStories tells the stories behind some of your favorite hymns. Today: Bouncing back– that's a quality to be cultivated, because life is full of struggles. How do we become reslient? Unsinkable? Joyful amid the blows and burdens of life? This hymn tells us: "A wonderful Savior is Jesus my Lord, He taketh my burden away; He holdeth me up, and I shall not be moved, He giveth me strength as my day." This hymn by Fanny Crosby explains the author's life, for Fanny faced three incredible hardships durning her ninety-five years. The first was her... If you are not familiar with the music of Phil Keaggy, believe me, you are in for a treat. If you ARE familiar with him, you are in for a treat, too, because you are going to get to hear him in a way that you probably never have...because Phil and I had a chance to talk last week for over an hour, and you are going to get to know another dimension of this remarkably gifted man. During our conversation, we talked about many different musicians, and I have woven some clips of most of them into our conversation, so you're going to get to sample many different artists and genres today. Kind of an audio smorgasborg. I hope you like it, and I hope you'll give me feedback. Call me toll free at 877-433-9091, or email me at steve.lifespring@gmail.com.
Hosted by Steve Webb. Lifespring! HymnStories tells the stories behind some of your favorite hymns. Today: One of the best histories of the gospel song era is George Stebbins' autobiography, Reminiscences and Gospel Hymn Stories. Stebbins was born in ht e mid-1880s in New York and showed early musical prowess. At age twenty-three, he moved to Chicago where he worked in churches and became acquainted with some of the "greats" of gospel music, such as Sankey and Bliss. In the late 1870s, D. L. Moody got hold of him, sending him into a lifetime of music evangelism. Listen to the show for Stebbins' account of the first time he and D. L. Moody ministered together, and how "Jesus, I Come" came to be written. An updated rendition of the hymn is beautifully performed by Scott Wesley Brown, who graciously granted his permission to use his song on today's show.

Hosted by Steve Webb. I cannot tell you how unbelievable excited i am to have this show for you today. What an incredible honor it is to be able to have you, the lifespring family, be the very first to hear Dove award winning, multi gold and platinum albums recipient, Contemporary Christian Music pioneer, survivor, my friend, my neighbor, and my brother in Christ, Bryan Duncan and his NehoSoul band's brand new, not yet even available in stores or online, brand new CD called "Still Dancin'" It's so new that mastering was just completed a day or two ago. My copy of teh CD is still warm, just out of the oven. Bryan came to my house just yesterday...I'm recording this on Tuesday morning, July 22, 2008, and spent a couple of hours with me talking about the album. We videotaped part of our conversation, so you'll want to keep an eye on Lifespring.TV, youtube, mevio, and other places over the next several days because I'm going to be releasing the video in chunks, and we recorded the audio that you are about to hear. I don't think this has ever been done...at least I've never heard anything like what you are about to hear...and I think you're really going to like the next 56 minutes. So let's get right to it...
