Direct link : http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdotLinux/~3/8D8xwqJAMEs/mandriva-sa-cedes-control-to-mandriva-community

jfruh writes "Mandriva SA, one of the oldest pure Linux companies still out there, was on the verge of shutting down earlier this year, but escaped by the skin of its teeth. Now, however, the company is punting control of its flagship Linux distribution to its developer community, leaving Mandriva SA's future prospects up in the air. From the blog post: 'This means that the future of the distribution will not be arbitrary[sic] decided by the Mandriva company anymore, but we intend to let the distribution evolve in and under the caring responsibility of the community.'"

4. Google Talks About Its Ubuntu Experience
Date/Time : 5/12/2012 11:12:00 PM
Direct link : http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdotLinux/~3/ppic_ViQIlM/google-talks-about-its-ubuntu-experience

dartttt writes "There was a very interesting session at the Ubuntu Developer Summit by Google developer Thomas Bushnell. He talked about how Ubuntu, its derivatives and Goobuntu (Google's customized Ubuntu based distro) are used by Google developers. He starts by saying 'Precise Rocks,' and that many Google employees use Ubuntu — including managers, software engineers, translators, people who wrote the original Unix, and people who have no clue about Unix. Many developers working on Chrome and Android use Ubuntu. Ubuntu systems at Google are upgraded every LTS release. The entire process of upgrading can take as much as four months, and it is also quite expensive, as one reboot or a small change can cost them as much as a million dollars across the company." Bushnell also mentions that Google Drive will soon be available for Linux. Other news out of UDS: there was discussion of a GNOME flavor of 12.10, Electronic Arts reaffirmed that they "won't delay their Windows work for Linux," and Unity 2D is likely to disappear in 12.10.

5. Open Source Driver For Microsoft Surface 2.0
Date/Time : 5/11/2012 11:12:00 PM
Direct link : http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdotLinux/~3/2Ep2lH7y4cs/open-source-driver-for-microsoft-surface-20

dartttt writes "Florian Echtler has developed an open-source driver for the Microsoft Surface 2.0 touch screen. According to him, the open source implementation works surprisingly well on Ubuntu 11.10. The process requires you to boot Linux on your Surface 2.0 in the first place. However, it can be done by just booting Ubuntu from a USB hard disk without modify anything on the original Win7 installation."

6. English Translation of Debian Administrator's Handbook Available
Date/Time : 5/11/2012 12:30:00 AM
Direct link : http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdotLinux/~3/ASZgi2WDabw/english-translation-of-debian-administrators-handbook-available

After a successful campaign to liberate the English translation of the French Debian Administrator's Handbook, Roland Mas and Raphaël Hertzog announced its availability under the Creative Commons BY-SA license. You can read it online, download it for free, apt-get install debian-handbook if you're using Debian, or buy a physical copy (or donate for an electronic version). I skimmed through it, and discovered a few debconf and libvirt tricks I hadn't known about within a few minutes.

An anonymous reader sends word that Apache OpenOffice 3.4 has been released (download). This is the first release since OpenOffice became a project at the Apache Software Foundation. The release notes list all of the improvements, the highlights of which The H has summarized: "According to its developers, Apache OpenOffice (AOO) 3.4.0, the first update since OpenOffice.org 3.3.0 from January 2011, now starts up faster than its predecessor and introduces a number of new features such as support for documents secured using AES256 encryption. The Linear Programming solver in the Calc spreadsheet program has been replaced with the CoinMP C-API library from the Computational Infrastructure for Operations Research (COIN-OR) project. As in LibreOffice 3.4.0, the DataPilot functionality has been renamed to Pivot Table, and now supports an unlimited number of fields. 9. Low-Cost Indian Tablet Project Falls To Corruption
Date/Time : 5/6/2012 1:18:00 PM
Direct link : http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdotLinux/~3/Z03A40RUoxU/low-cost-indian-tablet-project-falls-to-corruption

symbolset writes "The first Aakash tablet proposed for India schools has failed. Datawind managed to deliver the $45 Android tablet as reported here previously, but suffering a breach in faith by both their contract manufacturer and the accepting agency in India had to put the project on hold. Facing a loss in revenue it's turning into a disaster for the small Canadian company as they are now proving unable to deliver both the Aakash tablet and the parallel retail product. Senior executives have begun to flee. The company has presold a great many tablets, and delivery failure reports are beginning to mount. Is this the Phantom console of this decade?"

10. Microsoft Using Linux To Optimize Skype Traffic
Date/Time : 5/3/2012 11:48:00 PM
Direct link : http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdotLinux/~3/8av2tHz9jaw/microsoft-using-linux-to-optimize-skype-traffic

An anonymous reader writes "A security researcher believes that Microsoft has overhauled Skype, with thousands of Linux boxes serving as the 'supernodes' that route calls between users of the voice-over-IP service. Kostya Kortchinsky of Immunity Security 'discovered the Linux supernodes using a Skype probing technique he and colleague Fabrice Desclaux first demonstrated in 2006,' according to Ars Technica. The drastic infrastructure change doesn't affect the peer-to-peer nature of the calls between Skype users."

11. B&N Pulls Linux Format Magazine Over Feature On 'Hacking'
Date/Time : 5/3/2012 3:36:00 PM
Direct link : http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdotLinux/~3/AYtcv1G1Rus/bn-pulls-linux-format-magazine-over-feature-on-hacking

New accepted submitter super_rancid writes that issue 154 of the "UK-based Linux Format magazine was pulled from Barnes and Noble bookstores in the U.S. after featuring an article called 'Learn to Hack'. They used 'hack' in the populist security sense, rather than the traditional sense, and the feature — which they put online — was used to illustrate how poor your server's security is likely to be by breaking into it."

13. Tizen Reaches 1.0
Date/Time : 5/1/2012 8:12:00 PM
Direct link : http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdotLinux/~3/NX_CLpCnqoo/tizen-reaches-10

Earlier today, Tizen, Intel's post-MeeGo mobile OS, announced the availability of their first stable release. The H has a summary of the new features: "The source code for Tizen's Larkspur release has seen a number of new features added. The Web capabilities have now got full W3C/HTML5 specification support with 'key' WebRTC features incorporated and APIs to access the local camera and vibration. ... Tizen's graphics are based on X11 with a compositing window manager based on Enlightenment Foundation Libraries ... The SDK's IDE includes a new browser based tool which offers support for the Tizen APIs within a browser; this should allow developers to run and debug Tizen 'web applications' and see how those applications run with various device profiles. The alpha release of the browser based simulator should reduce the need to work with the emulator for many applications." The SDK release notes and source release notes have the gritty details. A new community wiki has been created, and source is available via git. This release comes just before the first Tizen developer conference, May 7-9th in San Francisco.

14. Why Desktop Linux Hasn't Taken Off
Date/Time : 4/30/2012 5:04:00 PM
Direct link : http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdotLinux/~3/78ORCVJb43g/why-desktop-linux-hasnt-taken-off

alphadogg writes "It's free, easier to use than ever, IT staffers know it and love it, and it has fewer viruses and Trojans than Windows. So, why hasn't Linux on the desktop taken off? When it comes to desktop Linux, the cost savings turn out to be problematic, there are management issues, and compatibility remains an issue. 'We get a lot more questions about switching to Macs than switching to Linux at this point, even though Macs are more expensive,' one Gartner analyst says."

15. Slackware: I'm Not Dead Yet!
Date/Time : 4/28/2012 12:02:00 AM
Direct link : http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdotLinux/~3/Cm34OXVOxmM/slackware-im-not-dead-yet

New submitter xclr8r writes "The longtime tinkering and learning distro of Linux Slackware found itself at the center of rumors and speculation when its website was down for a few days. Caitlyn Martin, developer of Linux Yarok, voiced concerns in DistroWatch and declared that she would be basing the new project off a distro with a more secure future. Meanwhile contributors continued to plug along with additions to the change log. Eventually Eric Hameleers expanded on his initial communication of 'old hardware — lack of funds' to a more thorough explanation quoted in the article. Have your pop up blocker ready."
