This month there is a basketball shoes sale at Eastbay. There is also a sale on Jordan shoes as well as clothing and gear, as discussed in the post for 15% off $75 for April 2012. All fifteen pairs of this retro looking shoe have been reduced, some are reduced by just $20 but some pairs have been lowered to $89.99 or $99.99. The $89.99 pairs have $40 off! Predictably many of the $89.99 pairs are already sold out of a lot of sizes but some pairs such as the white and red pair still have most sizes left. When these shoes were reviewed on the Eastbay blog they received ninety five points out of a possible hundred. This is pretty remarkable, they received maximum points in five out of seven categories.They received top marks in weight, traction, heel-toe transition, breathability and ankle support. They lost half a point for cushioning and one point for comfort and fit.
The major feature of this shoe is their lightness, everything about this shoe is designed with lightness in mind. This leads to major advantages like court feel but some people might not be happy with the lack of padding. There is almost no padding in the upper of this shoe. If you are concerned about weight then this basketball shoe is made for you, when they said crazy light they weren’t joking. This shoes weighs only 9.8 ounces in a size 9 and is currently the world’s lightest basketball shoe. For such a light shoe one notable thing is the high ankles, these were not removed in the interest of cutting weight. You may have noticed that the patterns on the sole of this shoe are quite unusual, they have been designed to cut weight in places that don’t wear down and they are thicker along the edges where the soles wear down most quickly. The herring bone pattern used offers an impressive amount of traction.
At the moment there is a sale on casual shoes at Champs Sports, some shoes have been reduced by as much as 30%. There are no infant’s shoes in this sale but there are shoes for men, women, big kids, little kids and toddlers. The most expensive pair that has been included is the Nike ACG Air Max Prime GTX for men, these were formerly $199.99 and are now $159.99. They look like standard men’s ankle boots but the have a visible Nike Air bubble in the sole and you can clearly see the Nike logo along the side. The chunky pair of shoes also has black leather that comes up high on the heel that makes them further reminiscent of a sports shoe. These tough, rugged shoes would work well as walking shoes since the upper is made entirely of waterproof leather, the Nike Air-Sole offers good cushioning and the outsole has a lugged tread for a good amount of traction in all conditions. These boots are pretty heavy at 23.2 ounces.

Backpacks are currently on sale at CCS. Not all backpacks are on sale, unfortunately none of the latest releases and none of the best selling backpacks are on sale. The best selling backpacks at the moment are the new Dakine Burnside backpack and the Nike SB. CCS only stocks two styles of the Dakine Burnside, the white and stone colors. In other online stones you can get styles in green, citron, red, black, timber and check. The Dakine Burnside is a stylish looking backpack that is also very practical, no doubt it is thanks to this combination that it’s being selling so well. There are straps at the back for your skateboard, there are zip up sidepockes and there is a laptop pocket at the back of the bag. The laptop pocket is accessed by a zip at the side, the pocket is fleece lined and has a good amount of padding. There is a strap for around your front for when the bag is especially heavy. The most similar bag is the Nike SB but this opens along the front like most standard backpacks. This bag from Nike is quite expensive, it is $35 more expensive then the Burnside at $89.99. Of the bags on sale, the most similar bag to the previous two is probably the Quiksilver Schoolie backpack, it has been reduced to $31.99. You can get in camouflage, black, grey stripes or black and white. This bag does not have straps to carry a skateboard, it does however have a good number of compartments. The main feature of this bag is its insulated cooler pocket.
If you are looking for a bargain, the Dakine wonder backpack is now $27.99, down from $34.99. It is available in northwood and red. It has skateboard straps and bungee cords on the front of the backpack. There is a pocket for your sunglasses at the top of the back that is lined with fleece to avoid any scratches. Another good looking backpack currently on sale is the classic looking DC Slider bag, it is now $8 less at $31.99. All five styles are included in the sale. This bag has one large main pocket, a laptop pocket and an interior organizer. There is a good amount of padding on the shoulder straps and the back of the backpack.
If Vans is your brand of choice then you could get the Vans Van Doren backpack for $31.99. You can get it in plaid or with classic Van’s style checkers. Apart from your skateboard, the most important part of your skating gear is always going to be your skate shoes. It is essential to have good grip, flexibility, support and protection. Every skater can agree about this, however different skaters prioritize different things, this is why some skate boarders wear high tops instead of low tops or prefer vulcanized soles to cupsoles. One is not necessarily better than the other, the right choice will always depend on the individual skater and their style of skating.
The main difference between cupsoles and vulcs is the amount of protection. Cupsoles provide much more protection but this comes at the expense of ‘board feel’. Skating with vulcanized shoes can be more difficult because it’s harder to feel what the skateboard is doing so it is more difficult to time different moves. This is the main disadvantage of this type of skate shoe. Because this type of skate shoe is bulkier and has a lot more padding they tend to last longer. Everyone has seen what a completely shredded and worn down pair of Vans or Converse looks like but you tend not to see that with DCs or Nike high tops.
Vulcanized soles are extremely flexible and provide good board feel, this comes at the expense of protection. If you were to jump down a big stair set wearing this type of shoe you might injure your feet and get heel bruises. Some companies have started inserting extra padding into the heels of capsules to try to stop this from happening.
If you are having a hard time feeling the board then you should try skating with vulcs. If you often injure your feet then cupsoles would be better for you. If you do a lot of tricks then you should look at shoes with thicker soles and more durable sides. Leather sides are usually tougher. If you are doing tricks then other things you want in a skate shoe are: shoe lace coverings, rubber toes and seams that are triple stitched. If you spend time jumping off benches or down steps then you want a shoe with plenty of padding, this will mean high tops with cupsoles. If you just want to cruise then their is no need for protection or padding so you want a shoe that is flexible and that will give you plenty of board feel, a pair of Converse or a pair of canvas Vans would be perfect for this.
