The Facebook Era

Facebook's IPO debuted yesterday. It was not a great beginning as Facebook's bankers had to step in numerous times to keep the shares from plunging below the $38 IPO listing price. Facebook [NASDAQ: FB] has an extremely high P/E of 122.37 and a massive market cap of $104.81 billion.

One of the big questions going around is whether Facebook is worth $100 billion. Clara Shih, CEO of Hearsay Social and author of The Facebook Era, talked with MoneyWatch's Jill Schlesinger about the value of Facebook. Shih sees a lot of upside in Facebook. She sees medium term growth in monetizing mobile and international advertising. In the long term she sees revenues from search, ecommerce and television. She does she a potential pitfall for Facebook in that she thinks an unknown competitor will definitely come along in five to ten years. So, the big question for Facebook might be whether or not it can figure out how to effectively monetize its massive user base before an unknown entity rises up and dethrones it. Take a look:

Attensity has announced the results of its study which analyzed public reaction in social media to the new Facebook Timeline format for profile pages. Using Attensity Analyze, the company processed 138,572 public comments posted on Facebook, Twitter and blogs over a six-week period. The results fond 93% of comment contain negative sentiment toward the new Facebook Timeline.

Rebecca MacDonald, vice president of marketing at Attensity, says, "We were rather shocked at the degree of frustration expressed by Facebook users toward the new Timeline format. We knew from anecdotal evidence that many users - both individuals and businesses - were unhappy with it, but the results generated by Attensity Analyze show a degree of negative sentiment we hadn't anticipated, given that Facebook is still in the process of rolling out Timeline to individual users."

The study found that phrases like "Delete FB Account"; "Hate New Timeline"; "Timeline Forced Changes"; "Switch to Other Social Network"; and "Will Delete FB" appear frequently in many posts about the Facebook Timeline. You can read more about Attensity's findings here.

A new study by JustAsk! from Crowd Science reveals some findings about how mothers are using social media. The study found that half of moms are friends with their children on Facebook.

Sandra Marshall, VP of Research at Crowd Science, says, "It's no surprise in the age of social media, that 79% of moms share content like videos, photos and links with friends and family online, but the fact that they use digital channels to stay connected with their kids is very telling. Moms today are no different than in the past. They just want to stay connected with the people that matter to them most: their kids."

The study also found that 1 in 10 moms are early adopters and 17% maintain their own blog. Here is an infographic with some of Crowd Science's findings:

Cecilie Schou AndreassenUniversity of Bergen Doctor of Psychology Cecilie Schou Andreassen (pictured on the right) heads a research project about Facebook addiction. She says Facebook addiction occurs more regularly in younger than older users. It also occurs more in people who anxious and socially insecure. Women are also more at risk for Facebook addiction.

Dr. Andreassen and her colleagues have developed The Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale. The scale is based on the following six criteria, which are scored on the following scale: (1) Very rarely, (2) Rarely, (3) Sometimes, (4) Often, and (5) Very often:
  • You spend a lot of time thinking about Facebook or plan use of Facebook.
  • You feel an urge to use Facebook more and more.
  • You use Facebook in order to forget about personal problems.
  • You have tried to cut down on the use of Facebook without success.
  • You become restless or troubled if you are prohibited from using Facebook.
  • You use Facebook so much that it has had a negative impact on your job/studies.
Andreassen's study shows that scoring "often" or "always" on at least four of the seven items may suggest that you are addicted to Facebook.
